Fight injustice and change lives with a tax-deductible donation

Lucy* was only 18 when she found herself pregnant and locked up in prison.
Despite her young age, she was already a survivor of sexual violence, and was experiencing homelessness and other challenges.
With dedicated support from the Aboriginal Legal Service, Lucy was freed from prison, connected with services and supports, and gave birth to a happy, healthy baby boy. The family are doing well.
Yet, too many Aboriginal women remain in the position Lucy experienced at her darkest hour. Did you know that most women in prison are mothers, and around 7% of women in Australian prisons are pregnant? One study suggests up to 30% of incarcerated Aboriginal women have been pregnant while in custody.
We need to raise $50,000 by 30 June to keep supporting Aboriginal women, children and men who are facing the legal system, and to keep Aboriginal people from getting trapped in the quicksand of legal systems.
There are also changes coming to the NSW court system and bail. We are concerned about how this will impact our clients accessing justice. You’ll hear more from us soon.
In the meantime, together we can fight injustice and change lives. Please make a tax-deductible donation to the ALS Fighting Fund today.
