This role would suit a youth or community officer who has experience in supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and young peoples, and a passion for keeping them out of avoidable remand and with their community.

About the role
The purpose of this role is to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and young peoples as part of the ALS’ bail advocacy program and broader children’s criminal law practice. The role will work with solicitors to reduce avoidable remand by providing professional and culturally appropriate support, referral services and basic legal information to children, young people and their families.
Your skills and experience
- Identify and be recognised in the community as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
- Demonstrated experience in supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and young peoples, including clients who are LGBTIQ+ or who have a disability
- Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal peoples combined with continuing respect and support for Aboriginal cultural practices when considering service delivery and other support for clients, their families, communities and employees
- Experience developing and strengthening relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to prepare and deliver community legal education
- Current NSW driver’s licence with the ability to travel independently and with passengers
