Galambany Circle Sentencing Support

The Galambany Circle Sentencing Court was established as an alternative approach for our people in the Canberra court system.

The Court is presided over by one Magistrate and has a panel of three Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders who live in the Canberra community. The panel members make recommendations to the Magistrate about sentencing options and the Magistrate then hands down a sentence.

Circle Sentencing Court is designed to be a less formal, to encourage a ‘conversation’, and make sentencing recommendations that are aimed at overall rehabilitation.

The ALS provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women attending the Galambany Circle Sentencing Court, assisting from referral point right through to assessment and sentencing.
