Primary Purpose of the Role
The primary responsibility of the Administration Officer, Civil Law Practice is to support the delivery of high-quality civil law services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
The position holder will be responsible for:
- Providing administration services to the civil practice including operating the office phone system
- Providing secretarial support services to Civil Solicitors
- Assisting with file and data management
Liaising with clients and other stakeholders.

About the Role
The Administration Officer is part of the Civil Law Practice.
The Civil Law Practice is an emerging practice within the ALS. Its services will address sexual harassment, employment and anti-discrimination issues; civil law issues that intersect with care, family and criminal matters; and incorporate existing civil law services within the organisation, such as fines work.
The Administration Officer will be responsible for:
- Provide administration support services to the civil law practice and its staff as required to support the operations of the practice
- Operating the office phone system between the hours of 9.00 am to 5.00 pm
- Assisting with file management
- Entering and maintaining data and reporting requirements
- Provide secretarial support services to Civil Solicitors and other Civil Law Practice staff including preparing correspondence and other legal documentation
- Arranging meetings and preparing records
- Provide all necessary administration support services to clients including:
- Conducting client intake
- Providing information and referrals
- Liaising with clients as directed by Civil Law practice staff
Liaise with external colleagues, including Solicitors, Tribunal and Ombudsman Staff, and community organisations
About You
We’re looking for someone who brings:
- Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- Capacity to perform key duties and responsibilities in a culturally appropriate manner
- Proven computer systems skills including Microsoft 365 and typing skills
- Excellent phone manner and communication skills and experience in operating a small to medium switchboard
- Demonstrated organisational and time management skills and the ability to multi-task
- Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal people combined with continuing respect and support for Aboriginal cultural practices when considering service delivery and other support for clients, their families, communities and employees
- Commitment to the principles of social justice
