The Volunteer Program provides an exciting opportunity for law students to gain an understanding of how the NSW
Criminal Justice System applies to Indigenous persons. The programme continues to be a win/win for both the volunteer
and the ALS (NSW/ACT). The role of the volunteer within the ALS (NSW/ACT) is crucial. This is due to the demands placed
upon solicitors, their research time is limited.
Throughout the duration of the program students assist ALS solicitors in all areas of our criminal practice.
The placement may include the preparation of briefs, court attendance, research, letter writing, the creation
and serving of documents and general assistance in the running of a community legal centre. Volunteers are able to research precedents,
sentencing patterns, legislation and legislative amendments and provide this information to our solicitors.
The contributions made by students to the ALS are invaluable. We aim to reward volunteers with interesting,
high quality work and equip them with a number of skills which are essential in the legal profession.
The ALS (NSW/ACT) has been fortunate enough through 2006/07 to be able to review and assess the volunteers and has
therefore been able to encourage volunteers to apply for positions within our organisation as they become available.
2006/07 saw a number of former volunteers gain full time employment as solicitors with the ALS (NSW/ACT).
