Election of new Members

01 Jun 2012

The ALS recently called for applications from the Aboriginal community of NSW and ACT for Company membership of the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT).

The ALS company consists of thirty Aboriginal Company Members from NSW and ACT. There are ten Company Members from each of the three zones the ALS operates through - Northern Zone, Western Zone and Central South Eastern Zone, which includes the ACT.

Applications for Company Membership are now closed.

As the ALS Company has thirty Members, a maximum of ten Company Members can be appointed to each Zone. More than ten applications were received in the Northern and Western Zones.

A meeting to elect new Members in the Northern and Western Zones are being held in the following locations:

Northern Zone Meeting

DATE: Saturday 16th June 2012

TIME: 10 am - 12 pm

LOCATION: 8-26 Victoria Street GRAFTON NSW

Western Zone Meeting

DATE: Saturday 23rd June 2012

TIME: 10 am - 12 pm

LOCATION: Cobar Golfing & Bowls Club Limited, Bloxham Street, COBAR NSW

All adult Aboriginal persons residing in the Northern and Western Zones of NSW are invited to attend and vote in their respective Zones.

Please note there will be no assistance for travel.

As written in the ALS Constitution, if a Zone receives less than ten applications for Company Membership, the applicants will automatically become Company Members of the Zone, assuming they have met the application criteria including being approved by ALS elected Directors.

If more than ten applications for Company Membership are received in a Zone:

- the Board will cause a meeting to be held within the relevant Zone to which all adult Aboriginal persons residing in the Zone will be invited by public notice through one of the regional newspapers circulating principally in and about the relevant zone (if available) and through one of the principal newspapers circulating throughout NSW and ACT;

- the attendees, in person, at such meeting will select from the persons who applied for membership ten eligible persons to be proposed as the Company Members to represent that Zone;

- provided the ALS Directors are satisfied a person proposed at the Zone meeting is eligible to hold membership in the relevant Zone for which they have applied, the ALS elected Directors must admit the person proposed to membership in the relevant Zone.
